Here are some of the important points about how you should ride together:
1.
Obey normal traffic rules, keep your place in the group. Follow all instructions
from the leader.
2.
First rider (The Road Captain) always rides close to the left
outside, and second rider close to the right inside, of the lane (se drawing
above).
3. Ride in staggered formation,
2 seconds behind the bike directly in front of you, 1 second behind the bike
to your left or to your right. The safe riding distance is 2 seconds.
4. If you are many, you can also have a Middle Road Captain,
somewhere in the middle, and a Sweep Road Captain last in
the group.
5. Never pass the bike in front of yours unless
you have to leave the group, and slow down if the bike behind cant
keep the same pace as you have.
6. If you just passed a red light and the next bike had to stop you
find a place to stop and wait. And the bike in front of you
will do the same.
7. If you are a newbee or have a slow
bike, make sure you get a position in the front of the group to get
away from the "rubber band effect"
that always effect drivers from the middle and back.
8. Always use blinkers and hand
signals if you have to break out of the group or change position.

9. If you get to a STOP sign or crossroad the second
bike drives up to the side of the road captain so the line of bikes
will be 2 and 2.
That give them a better view of the location.
When all clear they start
one by one and retake their driving positions.
10. If the group are large, one biker usually stop the traffic from
other roads until all bikes have passed.
That was a just few points, most big clubs
for HD, Yamaha, Honda etc have special educations just in column riding
so try to join one of them to learn this soon as possible. Or
practice in smaller groups.
As our club includes a wide range of bikes it
could be a good Idea to split a large group to smaller ones. 1 for
slower laid back customs, 1 for hangover speed bikes etc...

Remember
that 1 "funny guys" mistake could put several friends in
danger or even death. So stay cool in the line. |
